Welcome to Paragon of Jiu Jitsu in Wilmington, North Carolina! We are a family-friendly academy that wants to provide the best experience possible for all our students, from competitors to hobbyists. Students are taught self-defense while they become more physically fit. At the same time, our brand of Jiu Jitsu focuses on helping students improve their mental health and self-confidence, as many of our students use our classes to manage the stress of the day. About Us
Paragon of Jiu Jitsu was formed by three friends who share a passion for Jiu Jitsu and service to our community. We believe that jiu jitsu is a conduit through which we can positively impact individual lives and our community as a whole. It is our objective to provide a safe, clean training environment, quality Jiu Jitsu instruction, and an academy whose leadership is the model of integrity. Whether you are an avid Jiu Jitsu competitor or trying Jiu Jitsu for the first time, we have a place for you! We are proud to be an affiliate of Essential BJJ of White Plains, NY under the world-renowned competitor and instructor, Professor JT Torres.
History
Paragon of Jiu Jitsu opened in October 2023, but had its beginnings years ago. Owners Jeff Sorbel, Robert Taylor, and Brett Kostern started as white belts together in 2012. They trained for 13 years together, earning black belts and forming a strong bond through Jiu Jitsu. The three friends’ newfound joyful hobby inspired them to provide others with this positive experience. This led to Paragon of Jiu Jitsu’s doors opening in Wilmington, where they hope students may have a similar experience of gaining camaraderie like the three of them did. With their namesake, “Paragon”, meaning the best of, Jeff, Robert, and Brett strive to be the best Jiu Jitsu leaders possible for their students daily.

We pride ourselves on keeping our facility as clean as possible. Our students are always given the best place to train in our facility where cleanliness matters.
Keeping the vibes high is very important to us. Our students are provided expert training while being supported and encouraged.
Our four black belt trainers have a combined 55 years of Jiu Jitsu experience. They all have their own perspective and have an abundant amount of knowledge to pass down.
With training martial arts, safety is always a top priority. We make sure all our students are kept safe at all times.
We strive to build a friendly environment where everyone has fun and feels comfortable with each other. This begins with our three owners (Jeff, Robert, and Brett), who began together as white belts and have trained together ever since.
